Confessions of a Busy Mom Who Became an Independent Novelist

Day 13: #30DaysChivalry Accepting Help Can Be A Beautiful Thing

Dear Ladies of the World:

I have a problem with some of you. Some of you are ruining it for the rest of us. You insist on opening your own doors, doing things completely by yourselves and rejecting help. Don’t you know that sometimes when you do that, you are stopping something beautiful? When a gentleman offers to help you, accept it. Yes, it could be that he thinks you’re a ninny and can’t figure it out, but what if he’s doing it because he thinks you’re worth it? What if he’s kind to you because he was taught to honor women? What if he’s gracious to you because when he looks at you, he sees something that you don’t see: something beautiful, something elevated, something inspiring?

If we decide to be so independent that we refuse the help of gentlemen, then the gentlemen will give up. If that should happen, then both sides will have lost something precious. I would like to propose that you women learn important skills, like auto mechanics and carpentry, so you can survive, but if a gentleman offers to help you, (and you are in a good situation and accepting his help is a safe decision) TAKE IT! Receive it. Say thank you. Be gracious. You’ll both walk away from the situation blessed.

What do you think, ladies?
